Hurtle questioned:

Computer printers are great when they work correctly, but when they do not work as they should, they can become a real source of frustration. If you know how an inkjet printer works, then you are likely to have fewer problems with it and you are more likely to be able to make simple repairs to the printer yourself.

Inkjet printers are the cheapest printers that you can buy, and because of this many people elect to purchase them instead of the more expensive laser printers. An inkjet printer places very small droplets of ink onto a page that it is printing. The droplets are so small that they are nearly invisible to the naked eye. It is by putting a number of these tiny droplets together that you can see an image or print on your printed page.

The inkjet printer, and other printers like it, never actually touches the piece of paper where it is printing. Instead the inkjet printer uses a series of nozzles to spray the ink onto the page, and thus gives you the final image that you see on the paper.

Since inkjet printers never actually touch the paper they are considered to be “non-impact printers”. Typewriters on the other hand used a solid impact to place the image on the page. The actual shape of the letter or number from a bar on the typewriter would hit a ribbon and push the ink onto the page.

There are a variety of other types of non-impact printers, but many of them are rarely used or are considered too expensive. Often, you can find an inkjet printer for under $50 and this helps make the inkjet printers more appealing to most consumers.

Inside the printer you will find many different parts. The print head is the main part of the printer; it contains a series of nozzles that spray the ink onto the paper. There is also a print head stopper motor that moves the print head back and forth across the paper while printing. A belt attaches the print head to the print head stopper motor, and a stabilizer bar is used to stabilize the print head.

Inside the printer you will also find the paper feeder and the paper rollers as well as a paper feeder stepper motor. The paper feeder stepper motor synchronizes the movement of the paper with that of the print head so that the images that are printing appear on the correct place of the page. Most of the newer inkjet printers are using a Universal Serial Bus (USB) port to connect to your computer, but there are still quite a few older models that use a parallel port.

When you purchase a new inkjet printer, it will come with a disc that you will need to install the software onto your computer. Once you place the disc into your computer it will activate an installation wizard. Generally the installation wizard provides some very easy-to-follow instructions on how to place the software into your computer.

The only hardware that you will actually need to install in the inkjet printer is a power cord to an electrical socket, a cord from the printer to your computer (either a USB port or parallel port), and then you will need to install the ink cartridges, leaving you with only the paper to load.

For people who have never used a computer printer before, the main things they are interested in when learning is how to load the paper and how to replace the ink cartridges. For the average computer printer owner, these are the only maintenance tasks they will need to carry out during the life of the printer.

The actual ink cartridges will vary according to the particular model and brand of printer that you have. Some brands have one ink cartridge for black and one for all other colors; some printers have only one cartridge that contains all colors, including black. Yet, other models will have a separate ink cartridge for every primary color.

When you buy a new printer, be sure and read the box to see if the printer comes with ink cartridges or not. It would seem apparent that every new printer would come with ink cartridges included, but that is just not the case. When you do have the need to replace the ink cartridges, you want to be absolutely sure that you get the correct replacement cartridges. Different brands and models of printers use different ink cartridges. I have found it best to remove the old ink cartridge and check the part number to be absolutely sure that I get the correct replacement ink cartridges for my printers.

If you are willing to buy your replacement ink cartridges in advance of your current cartridges running out, then you can expect to save some big money by buying your ink jet cartridges from internet retailers. Don’t take my word for it, shop around and compare prices. You might be surprised to see how much some of your local stores are marking up these essential computing products.

Knowing how you will use your printer will help you to decide what type of printing paper to purchase. If you intend on printing a large number of photos you may want to get a higher quality photo-paper. If you are a college student using a printer primarily for term papers, then a lower quality paper will usually serve your needs just fine.

You can find inkjet printers made by a variety of manufacturers at a wide variety of prices. You can spend as little or as much as you want on an inkjet printer. Your purchase decision will greatly depend on how you plan to use your printer. Again, if you plan on creating photos or business cards with your printer, you may want to opt for a higher quality model, but if you simply want to print out some papers, then it might make better sense to go with a less expensive printer.

Advertising Poker questioned:

Inkjet printers are very inexpensive. They are the type of printer that almost everybody uses. Regardless of manufacturer, inkjet printers produce high-quality printouts in a less amount of time. Inkjet printers use three types of technologies: thermal ink jet, piezoelectric ink jet and continuous ink jet. It depends on the manufacturer which technology is used on a specific printer.

Thermal inkjet uses ink cartridges that have tiny electrically heated chambers where the photolithographic process unfolds. The printer fires a pulse through a heating element to produce the image. A steam explosion process creates bubbles that hurl ink droplets to the surface of the paper producing the printout.

Piezoelectric inkjet also uses ink cartridges. The difference is that instead of using heating elements, it uses piezoelectric crystals. This type of printer allows more flexibility in the use of ink, but it can be more expensive.

Continuous inkjet uses ink cartridges where high-pressure pumps push the ink out of the cartridge. Piezoelectric crystals in the printer head break the ink droplets at a regular interval. The droplets pass through an electromagnetic field where the final printout is formed. This type of technology prevents the nozzle in your printer from clogging.

Whichever technology may be utilized by the manufacturer, the end result is this: an inexpensive printer that uses very expensive inks.

However, there are manufacturers that produce discounted printer cartridges. You can purchase cheaper printer cartridges that are imitations of the real thing, or original ink cartridges that are simply refilled with ink. Keep in mind that these alternatives are not produced by the printer manufacturers themselves. These products can save you as much as 80 percent of the price you pay for authentic cartridges.

The downside to using imitation inks is that they have a higher tendency to leak. And since you are not using authentic ink cartridges provided by the printer manufacturer, the warranty of your printer becomes automatically void.

Piezo and Bubblejet Inkjet Printers

Print Charts questioned:

There is a fundamental divide in the inkjet printer industry, piezoelectric printers such as Epson (Mutoh/Roland/Mimaki), vs Canon/HP/Lexmark using bubblejet technology.

An inkjet printer has an ink reservoir that connects to a firing chamber that is attached to a nozzle – where the ink droplet emerges. The difference between the two technologies lies in the firing chamber.

Piezoelectric crystals are pretty amazing things, when you put an electric charge across them they change shape and they can do this quickly and repeatably. A tiny crystal in the firing chamber twitches and creates a pressure wave that expels a droplet from the nozzle.

A bubblejet printer has a tiny heater element within the firing chamber which boils a tiny drop of the ink, this expands explosively and creates the pressure wave to drive the drop from the nozzle.

Why does the ink come out of the nozzle rather than blowing back up to the reservoir? Well in a way it does, it’s just a matter of scale. If you are standing by a building and there is a small explosion between you and the building…which one moves the most?

So there isn’t a vast difference between the two methods. The consequences of their differences do lead to some major issues.

A bubblejet head, using a heater element and boiling ink is less robust than a piezo crystal running near room temperature. The heater can burn out leading to failure of the nozzle especially if run dry but more importantly the boiling of ink by the element causes deposits to form on the element (the Japanese engineers refer to it as biscuiting). This can lead to a loss of efficiency over the life of the head. Consequently bubblejet heads tend to be replaced frequently, often with every ink cartridge change where the head is integrated into the cartridge. Piezo heads are fixed and only the ink is replaced.

The deposit during boiling is a serious constraint upon the formulation of the ink and it is crucial that the formulation is correct. Third party inks can be a poor choice.

Piezo heads have a much greater formulation tolerance.

Which technology is better?

Both do the job at roughly the same price and, if you can’t tell the difference on the paper, …who cares.

How Do Inkjet Printers Work?

Powerful Domain questioned:

Inkjet printers, along with laser printers, are one of the two most common types of printers available today. Quite often they are significantly smaller in size and load capacity than their laser counterparts, this in turn makes them far cheaper and a far better solution as a desktop device for infrequent usage.

The inkjet works by literally transfering ink directly to the page in coordination with the digital message that is delivered from the computer itself. The image is plotted across the page and transfered in quick horizontal motions across the page. With a colour inkjet this will be done using the four basic colours, with variations created by combining the primaries (blue, yellow and red) along with black.

Depending on the quality of the image that you require as well as the capabilities of the printer itself, you are able to create reasonably clear images with a reasonable dpi (dots per inch). As with all printers though the quality is determined by the clarity of the colour and the compactness of the dots. As a newer version of the dot matrix printer, for which the dots were larger and often more visible – thus ruining much of the definition of images – there is a similar principle at work, just with an updated standard of quality and accuracy.

Unlike a laser printer, which uses a toner cartridge filled with a coloured powder, the inkjet has standard liquid ink. This is finely distributed in the predetermined pattern on a page in order to create the image. This is an exacting process, with the size of the dot and the gap between each one being microscopic in size. As an inkjet quickly moves across the page it leaves the ink dots in its wake. As you may appreciate, this isn’t always a quick process. A full A4 page full of colour and text will take upwards of 15 seconds on many models, although this will of course vary.

One of the criticisms of an inkjet is that there are often streaks or lines across the page. This is primarily caused by the motion by which the ink is transfered to the page. Better quality printers will reduce this, in fact many are almost entirely invisible to the naked eye. Another issue is with the drying time. As there is actual liquid ink used in the process of generating an image, it does take a fair amount of time to become usable. This can become an issue when putting together multi-page presentations and is always a factor when it comes to choosing the right printer for any job.

Despite the complexities of the processes that it goes through each and every day, the inkjet is a stunningly simple piece of machinery. They have been used in homes and offices throughout the world for more than two decades. Their cost-effectiveness has made them a highly accessible piece of equipment and their continued resilience has ensured that they remain a firm favourite.

Unfortunately an inkjet really isn’t cut out for doing larger jobs, especially on a continued basis. This is why they have never been a regular feature in larger offices and have usually been overlooked in favour of the laser printer in such instances. However, despite the relative speed issues, it still remains a very cheap, accessible option that has been embraced by homes and office desktops everywhere. The inkjet printer is constantly evolving, with new features and specifications becoming available all the time. But despite all these changes, all these innovations, it still works in a very simple dot formation using conventional liquid ink.

What Makes the Epson Stylus Pro Printers So Special when Compared to Other Inkjet Printers?

Flu App questioned:

The Epson Stylus Pro 9800 is a 44 inch wide format printer designed specifically for artists and photographers who require the finest quality art reproduction. It is the leading wide format printer in a series designed by Epson, named the Stylus Pro. There are also other printers in the line such as the 24 inch Epson Stylus Pro 7800 which is exactly the same as the larger model only offering less width and a much more competitive price. These printers have captured extraordinary market share since their release due to its ability to deliver the highest printed image quality. Nonetheless, many other factors play into the line’s popularity that are not commonly discussed.

Owners of these inkjet printers rarely mention how easy they are to use. This is because most of the owners don’t have another wide format inkjet printer to compare it to – but those that do are quick to affirm the user-friendliness of the Stylus Pro Series Printers. The printer driver software is easy to use and is supported by an extremely wide base of dealers as well as users. It is easy to obtain ICC profiles and color management advice or consultation from someone relatively local. Furthermore, manufactures of fine art paper and inkjet canvas make their products very easy to use in the Epson printers.

The success of the Epson Stylus Pro Series began in the early 2000’s and has catapulted the company into a far lead versus the competition regarding the fine art reproduction and photography marketplaces. Third party manufacturers of inkjet papers, canvas, inks, raster image processors (rip), and so forth have rallied behind the Epson Stylus Pro printers by making products compatible with them. As a result, people interested in purchasing an Epson Stylus Pro are much more inclined to do so, instead of buying a competing printer, when they are presented with so many options. It is easy for them to see where the momentum of the industry is, and where they should be.

Canon Printer Ink Variations and How They Work

April 6, 2009 by Ink Jet

Comments Off

Funny Digest questioned:

Canon manufactures numerous kinds of printers made specifically for photography and in all these different variations image quality is of the most significant importance. There are several different technologies that they use to accomplish this, each depending on the type of printer involved, and therefore each uses various different types of ink. There are several different styles involved for Canon printer ink.

Canon’s Inkjet Printer Ink

Most of the photo printers produced by Canon utilize inkjet technology. This technology creates images by outputting onto paper a significant number of droplets of ink. These micro-droplets are created from the nozzles in the section of the printer called the printer head. This method of printing is one of the most popular and most common as well, and is typically quiet, fast and produces high-quality images.

Fairly standard cartridges carry canons printer ink for its inkjet printers. One significant feature that makes canons printer ink cartridges different than many other manufacturers is the strategic choice to keep the printer head, the section from which the nozzles ink is output onto the paper, separate from the cartridge.

It is important to note that in various inkjet printers the print head is mounted directly onto the cartridge, therefore it has to be replaced each time the cartridge needs replacing. It is significant to point out that even amongst Canon’s products, not every inkjet cartridge is compatible with every canon inkjet printer. Different styles of cartridges are used on different models. Various models have all-in-one color cartridges, while some others utilize a separate cartridge for each significant printing color: magenta, cyan, black, and yellow.

Canon’s Dye-sublimation Printer Ink

There are some of Canon’s products, most notably their smaller handheld photo printers, that utilize what is known as thermal dye-sublimation system of printing. What this actually means is that the printer utilizes predetermined quantities of heat to transfer ink onto the paper from a ribbon. All four basic ink colors are contained in the ribbon itself, that are transferred onto the paper in different successive layers.

There is a clear protective layer that is added over the top of the ink for Canon’s photo printers. These can be a highly effective means of producing images very quickly, and end up using less space compared to ink jet printers.

Canon’s dye-sublimation printer ink is generally sold on the market with the paper itself in a package. These particular packages are mostly interchangeable, as the majority of Canon’s compact photo printers utilize similar papers styles, sizes and ink. Canon also makes available specialty versions, specifically manufactured to make greeting cards or labels. These particular ones may not be compatible with many of Canon’s printer models, but are useful for creating specialty items nonetheless.

Frugal Person questioned:

When choosing a printer the first choice will be whether to buy a laser printer or an inkjet printer. The following summarize the main advantages and disadvantages of inkjet and laser printers.

Inkjet Printers

Inkjet printers works by propelling droplets of ink onto the paper. The ink is released from small removable cartridges and if it is a colour inkjet printer there will normally be a black cartridge and three different coloured cartridges. You can either replace the whole cartridge or refill the cartridges with a special refill kit.

Advantages

Inkjet printers are considerably cheaper to buy. High end printers are capable of producing good quality images when used with special paper. Most models are relatively light weight and compact so they don’t take up too much space on the desk.

Disadvantages

Due to the cost of ink, running an inkjet printer over time is a more expensive than a laser printer. Prints emerge from the printer slightly wet and may need time to dry. Printing is slower and therefore inkjets aren’t designed for high volume printing.
Laser Printers

This printer incorporates a laser beam as a part of the image processing. Rather than using ink a laser printer uses toner, a dry plastic powder combined with carbon black or colouring agents. The consumable a part of the printer is encased in a cartridge which needs to be replaced from time to time.

Advantages

Laser prints are generally very high and very accurate. For high volume printing laser printers are considerably cheaper to run. Printing is fast so they can handle large volumes. Due to the technology used prints from a laser printer emerge from the printer dry to the touch.

Disadvantages

Buying a laser printer can be expensive when compared to an inkjet. Colour laser printers are significantly more expensive than a colour inkjet. Laser printers are larger and heavier as they need to contain the imaging drum and laser technology.
