Using inkjet printer cleaning cartridges on a regular basis can prolong the life of your inkjet printer’s printhead and provide consistently better print quality.
How do you understand if your print head is clogged? Here are some signs that indicate a clogged print head problem:
If white lines occur when printing,
If faintness or broken lines occur in the nozzle check pattern,
If ink doesn’t come out while you are printing,
If the printer is being used again after a long period of time for the first time,
If you are having to perform a printhead cleaning cycle more often than usual (one or two times),
If your inkjet printer print-head is clogged, then you can follow these steps.
1. Install the cleaning cartridge with the same method of replacing cartridge.
2. Execute head cleaning and nozzle check procedures. If print quality is still poor, clean the print head again. This method is not suitable for cleaning deteriorated and damaged print head.
If your ink cartridge nozzles are clogged (not the print-head), then follow these steps instead:
1. Rest the clogged nozzles in warm water and then soak them until the dried ink begins to flow from the nozzle.
2. After a couple minutes, take the nozzles out of the water and dry it with a soft tissue
3. Reinstall the printer cartridge and run the print-head cleaning mechanism
4. If this does not work, repeat the process.
5. If your cartridge still does not print after repeating, uninstall the cartridge and place it on a soft tissue or cotton swab with rubbing alcohol in an upside down position. Let the cartridge sit on it for the night.
6. Reinstall the cartridge and run the print-head cleaning mechanism
Your ink cartridge nozzles could also be blocked with dried ink. If your cartridge has waited outside for more than a few of days, it is likely that they are clogged.

The printer is the one computer component that requires the most attention, though the importance of regular maintenance is often overlooked. Your printer is the single conduit between concept and creation — the device that brings your virtual media into the physical world.
In this article I will provide tips to maximize your print quality and introduce you to regular maintenance procedures. This information is provided to assist you in consistently producing quality prints and to extend the life of your printer.
Whether you use your ink jet printer frequently or infrequently, to improve and lengthen your printer’s life it is essential to ensure that it is clean, running smoothly and is clog free. It is recommended that you clean your printer thoroughly every 6 months for optimal performance based on how often the printer is used. Also, if you have pets it is a good idea to blow the printer with compressed air from time to time as dust and hair take their toll over time.
Keep in mind that the maintenance processes consumes ink, so only perform it when necessary or swap out your ink with inexpensive cleaning cartridges to conserve your ink levels. The maintenance tools can be accessed through the printer driver or control center. Once the cycle begins it is imperative that you run the complete cycle before restarting the printer.
oCheck the Nozzle: Are you experiencing a faint print quality or are certain colors failing to print? You will need to run your nozzle pattern check utility. If the printout still shows gaps you will need to clean the nozzles.
oClean the Print Heads: If your nozzle check indicates that your print heads are clogged, it will be necessary to run the cleaning utility which removes the blockages. Occasionally it may be necessary to perform the cleaning utility more than once to remove the blockage. Also, some printers have a built in ‘deep cleaning’ option that you may need to perform.
oAlign the Print Heads: If the lines and colors are out of sync or there is banding, it may be necessary to align your print heads. This can be done by choosing the ‘alignment’ option on your printer’s utility menu.
If cleaning and aligning do not solve your problem, you will have to contact the original manufacturer to assess the cost of the repair. If your printer isn’t covered by a warranty you should weigh the repair cost versus the cost of a new printer. Sometimes a new printer equipped with new cartridges is the most logical alternative.

Canon Printer Ink Variations and How They Work

Canon manufactures numerous kinds of printers made specifically for photography and in all these different variations image quality is of the most significant importance. There are several different technologies that they use to accomplish this, each depending on the type of printer involved, and therefore each uses various different types of ink. There are several different styles involved for Canon printer ink.
Canon’s Inkjet Printer Ink
Most of the photo printers produced by Canon utilize inkjet technology. This technology creates images by outputting onto paper a significant number of droplets of ink. These micro-droplets are created from the nozzles in the section of the printer called the printer head. This method of printing is one of the most popular and most common as well, and is typically quiet, fast and produces high-quality images.
Fairly standard cartridges carry canons printer ink for its inkjet printers. One significant feature that makes canons printer ink cartridges different than many other manufacturers is the strategic choice to keep the printer head, the section from which the nozzles ink is output onto the paper, separate from the cartridge.
It is important to note that in various inkjet printers the print head is mounted directly onto the cartridge, therefore it has to be replaced each time the cartridge needs replacing. It is significant to point out that even amongst Canon’s products, not every inkjet cartridge is compatible with every canon inkjet printer. Different styles of cartridges are used on different models. Various models have all-in-one color cartridges, while some others utilize a separate cartridge for each significant printing color: magenta, cyan, black, and yellow.
Canon’s Dye-sublimation Printer Ink
There are some of Canon’s products, most notably their smaller handheld photo printers, that utilize what is known as thermal dye-sublimation system of printing. What this actually means is that the printer utilizes predetermined quantities of heat to transfer ink onto the paper from a ribbon. All four basic ink colors are contained in the ribbon itself, that are transferred onto the paper in different successive layers.
There is a clear protective layer that is added over the top of the ink for Canon’s photo printers. These can be a highly effective means of producing images very quickly, and end up using less space compared to ink jet printers.
Canon’s dye-sublimation printer ink is generally sold on the market with the paper itself in a package. These particular packages are mostly interchangeable, as the majority of Canon’s compact photo printers utilize similar papers styles, sizes and ink. Canon also makes available specialty versions, specifically manufactured to make greeting cards or labels. These particular ones may not be compatible with many of Canon’s printer models, but are useful for creating specialty items nonetheless.
