Understanding How an Inkjet Printer Works

Hurtle questioned:

Computer printers are great when they work correctly, but when they do not work as they should, they can become a real source of frustration. If you know how an inkjet printer works, then you are likely to have fewer problems with it and you are more likely to be able to make simple repairs to the printer yourself.

Inkjet printers are the cheapest printers that you can buy, and because of this many people elect to purchase them instead of the more expensive laser printers. An inkjet printer places very small droplets of ink onto a page that it is printing. The droplets are so small that they are nearly invisible to the naked eye. It is by putting a number of these tiny droplets together that you can see an image or print on your printed page.

The inkjet printer, and other printers like it, never actually touches the piece of paper where it is printing. Instead the inkjet printer uses a series of nozzles to spray the ink onto the page, and thus gives you the final image that you see on the paper.

Since inkjet printers never actually touch the paper they are considered to be “non-impact printers”. Typewriters on the other hand used a solid impact to place the image on the page. The actual shape of the letter or number from a bar on the typewriter would hit a ribbon and push the ink onto the page.

There are a variety of other types of non-impact printers, but many of them are rarely used or are considered too expensive. Often, you can find an inkjet printer for under $50 and this helps make the inkjet printers more appealing to most consumers.

Inside the printer you will find many different parts. The print head is the main part of the printer; it contains a series of nozzles that spray the ink onto the paper. There is also a print head stopper motor that moves the print head back and forth across the paper while printing. A belt attaches the print head to the print head stopper motor, and a stabilizer bar is used to stabilize the print head.

Inside the printer you will also find the paper feeder and the paper rollers as well as a paper feeder stepper motor. The paper feeder stepper motor synchronizes the movement of the paper with that of the print head so that the images that are printing appear on the correct place of the page. Most of the newer inkjet printers are using a Universal Serial Bus (USB) port to connect to your computer, but there are still quite a few older models that use a parallel port.

When you purchase a new inkjet printer, it will come with a disc that you will need to install the software onto your computer. Once you place the disc into your computer it will activate an installation wizard. Generally the installation wizard provides some very easy-to-follow instructions on how to place the software into your computer.

The only hardware that you will actually need to install in the inkjet printer is a power cord to an electrical socket, a cord from the printer to your computer (either a USB port or parallel port), and then you will need to install the ink cartridges, leaving you with only the paper to load.

For people who have never used a computer printer before, the main things they are interested in when learning is how to load the paper and how to replace the ink cartridges. For the average computer printer owner, these are the only maintenance tasks they will need to carry out during the life of the printer.

The actual ink cartridges will vary according to the particular model and brand of printer that you have. Some brands have one ink cartridge for black and one for all other colors; some printers have only one cartridge that contains all colors, including black. Yet, other models will have a separate ink cartridge for every primary color.

When you buy a new printer, be sure and read the box to see if the printer comes with ink cartridges or not. It would seem apparent that every new printer would come with ink cartridges included, but that is just not the case. When you do have the need to replace the ink cartridges, you want to be absolutely sure that you get the correct replacement cartridges. Different brands and models of printers use different ink cartridges. I have found it best to remove the old ink cartridge and check the part number to be absolutely sure that I get the correct replacement ink cartridges for my printers.

If you are willing to buy your replacement ink cartridges in advance of your current cartridges running out, then you can expect to save some big money by buying your ink jet cartridges from internet retailers. Don’t take my word for it, shop around and compare prices. You might be surprised to see how much some of your local stores are marking up these essential computing products.

Knowing how you will use your printer will help you to decide what type of printing paper to purchase. If you intend on printing a large number of photos you may want to get a higher quality photo-paper. If you are a college student using a printer primarily for term papers, then a lower quality paper will usually serve your needs just fine.

You can find inkjet printers made by a variety of manufacturers at a wide variety of prices. You can spend as little or as much as you want on an inkjet printer. Your purchase decision will greatly depend on how you plan to use your printer. Again, if you plan on creating photos or business cards with your printer, you may want to opt for a higher quality model, but if you simply want to print out some papers, then it might make better sense to go with a less expensive printer.

Inkjet Printer Review – Inkjet Printer Buying Recommendations & Tips

Hyphens questioned:

Deciding which printer to purchase can be overwhelming. There are so many brand names and factors to consider. While a printer may be cheap on the initial purchase, is the cost of ink cartridges going to make it more trouble than it’s worth? How about how often the cartridges have to be replaced? Is the printer is even reliable? What can you find information about all of this? Thankfully a consumer no longer needs to rely on the information provided by a sales person at the store to get a truthful inkjet printer review.

There are several sites out there, including eOpinions, Consumer Research, Cnet, and ZDNet which offer consumer inkjet printer reviews and a numerous amount of other items. These sites allow someone to put down the pros and cons of a product, as well as provide a description of experiences. However, keep in mind that these reviews may not paint a completely accurate picture of a product. While some individuals do go out and post reviews about products they love, it is more likely that people are going to review products they have problems about. For some reason, human nature tends to only been vocal about the worse of a product than spreading the good news about a useful one.

When considering these reviews before buying a printer, pay attention to what it is the consumer is stating as a negative and then consider if that is something that is going to be a problem for you. Some reviewers will give a bad rating for a product because they felt the company’s customer service is poor, but dealing with the customer service may be something you never have to deal with. Also they may rate it poor in the inkjet printer review simply because a USB cable was missing (which is standard practice now) or the sales rep at the store was rude. These negative points don’t really affect the actual printer. Other poor reviews can be given because a computer doesn’t work well with Macintosh computers or with a Windows 2000 operating system.

Another great source for a inkjet printer review is magazines, which also can be found online, like PCMag, PCWorld, or MacWorld. These are more thorough reviews where technology professions test out all the features of a printer and then write an objective viewpoint of how each one functions. They also discuss the printer’s operating software, and if it has any additional features or capabilities. For instance, if a printer does photos, then the reviewers will discuss the quality of photos and the different sizes as well as if the printer offers any other options like bring able to print directly from a media card or from a sheet of thumbnail prints.

Printer Ink Cartridges – How Much Are They Costing Your Business?

Discount Sets questioned:

How do printer ink cartridges affect your bottom line? Do you have more than one printer in the office? Would you like to know what you are spending on office printing? Are you considering a new printer and would like a simple way to compare the costs of different brands and models?

Due to the huge and ever changing range of printers available for sale, the cost to print on individual printers can vary greatly. Regardless if your printer is a laser printer or an inkjet the following steps outline the easy to calculate which one is the most economical to use.

Identify all of the consumable components of your printer (toners/printer ink cartridges, drums, fuser units). The easiest way to do this is to check your printer manual, or contact your printer cartridge supplier.

Identify the price you are paying per consumable, or its Recommended Retail Price.

Identify the number of pages each consumable is reported to print. The industry standard of print yield (pages the consumable will print) is 5%. This means that a standard page of text, such as a letter, will print on approximately 5% of the page (if you folded a page 20 times, one square would be 5%). Of course if you print a high proportion of graphics on your page, your print yields will be much lower.

THE CALCULATION

Divide the price of the consumable by the number of pages it yields (at 5%).

For example:

HP 2600N Colour Laser Printer

Q6000 Black Cartridge 2500 $115

Q6001 Cyan Cartridge 2000 pages $126

Q6002 Yellow Cartridge 2000 pages $126

Q6003 Magenta Cartridge 2000 pages $126

The black ink cartridge is $115/2500 = $0.046 (just under 5 cents per page)

The colour ink cartridges are $126/2000 = $0.063 each (just over 6 cents per page)

Notes: Make sure you include the costs of replaceable drums or fusers or maintenance kits etc.

The cost of printer ink cartridges and their yields is often readily available on the manufacturers website

By following the above steps, you should be able to determine the cost of office printing and with some investigation on printers and printer ink cartridges you should be on the way to lowering the cost of printing.

Laser Printers And Inkjet Printers – Advantages And Disadvantages

Frugal Person questioned:

When choosing a printer the first choice will be whether to buy a laser printer or an inkjet printer. The following summarize the main advantages and disadvantages of inkjet and laser printers.

Inkjet Printers

Inkjet printers works by propelling droplets of ink onto the paper. The ink is released from small removable cartridges and if it is a colour inkjet printer there will normally be a black cartridge and three different coloured cartridges. You can either replace the whole cartridge or refill the cartridges with a special refill kit.

Advantages

Inkjet printers are considerably cheaper to buy. High end printers are capable of producing good quality images when used with special paper. Most models are relatively light weight and compact so they don’t take up too much space on the desk.

Disadvantages

Due to the cost of ink, running an inkjet printer over time is a more expensive than a laser printer. Prints emerge from the printer slightly wet and may need time to dry. Printing is slower and therefore inkjets aren’t designed for high volume printing.
Laser Printers

This printer incorporates a laser beam as a part of the image processing. Rather than using ink a laser printer uses toner, a dry plastic powder combined with carbon black or colouring agents. The consumable a part of the printer is encased in a cartridge which needs to be replaced from time to time.

Advantages

Laser prints are generally very high and very accurate. For high volume printing laser printers are considerably cheaper to run. Printing is fast so they can handle large volumes. Due to the technology used prints from a laser printer emerge from the printer dry to the touch.

Disadvantages

Buying a laser printer can be expensive when compared to an inkjet. Colour laser printers are significantly more expensive than a colour inkjet. Laser printers are larger and heavier as they need to contain the imaging drum and laser technology.

Choosing a Home Office Printer – Inkjet Versus Laser

Miniature Set questioned:

Your home office printer is going to be an important part of your home business. While making the right choice of printer seems like a daunting task, your major decision is going to be between an ink jet and a laser printer. Along with a different way of delivering ink to the page, these two types of printers have their own benefits and drawbacks.

The key difference between the two printers is the type of ink that they use. Ink jet printers use liquid ink and laser printers use powdered ink. Laser printers come in two varieties, monochrome (black and white) and color. Each type of printer serves different purposes.

Most businesses use monochrome laser printers because they print a lot of black and white documents. If you’re using your printer for the same reason, you may want to consider a monochrome laser printer. They have a better page output than ink jets and come at a midrange price. They are normally priced higher than ink jets, but their ink refills cost a lot less. Monochrome laser printers are perfect if you need to print lots of pages of text. The only drawback to this type of printer is that you can’t print color.

If you need any color printing done, an ink jet printer will be your least inexpensive option, at least in terms of initial cost outlay. Ink jets offer a lot power for their speed, but they are definitely slower than laser printers. The main advantage is their price and their portability. Compared to laser jet models, ink jets are very lightweight and are generally smaller. This makes them a good option if you don’t have a whole lot of space for your printer.

The major drawback to ink jet printers is the cost of their ink. Compared to laser printers, refills for ink jets cost substantially more. Even though you’re saving more at the onset, you’ll be paying a lot in the long run. The price of ink over the life of your printer can be a deterrent to getting an ink jet. But if your budget for your printer at the outset is small, then an ink jet might be your only option. They are generally cheaper than laser printers.

When it comes to quality of printing, speed of printing and overall quality, color laser printers are the best choice. All of this comes at a higher price than you’ll pay for an ink jet printer or monochrome laser printer, but it may be worth it if you need to print high quality documents. A color laser printer has ink that is relatively inexpensive compared to ink jet ink. In addition, a color laser printer will allow you to print high quality photos along with black and white documents. This can save you money on having your pictures printed, and allow you to print as many copies as you need.

Depending on the kind of business you’re in, the quality that you get from a color laser printer may well be worth the initial cost. If you have the money to spend, a color laser printer is your best bet. But if you’d rather keep those initial costs low and print color, then an ink jet printer might be the better way to go.
